Coming to Sydney Australia for a holiday? If you have a baby or child 7 years and younger you will need to have a Australian approved child car seat to transport them in a car.


Traveling in public transport such as trains, bus, ferry or light rail (trams) will not require you to have your baby or young children in an approved child restraint. However, you cannot take any taxi, uber or ride-share vehicles without an approved child car seat. It’s also important to ensure the child seat is probably installed. Failure to do so will result in heavy fines and danger to your child.

Baby is under 12 months old


Australian laws requires any 6 months and under baby to be seated in an rearward facing position. It is highly recommended that a baby up to 12 months be seated in a rearward facing position. You can use a baby capsule or convertible child car seat.


Child is up to 4 years old


An child 4 years and under must be in an approved child seat that is fully harnessed. You can use an convertible child car seat.


Child is up to 7 years old


A child from 4 year old can use a booster. A booster in Australia has the base and the backrest and once the child is seated they use the vehicles seat belt to harness. There is also the option for a harnessed booster that is suitable from 6 months to 7 years – where the child is fully harnessed.


When to stop using a child car seat


A child over 7 years old does not legally need to be in a child restraint. However, the recommendation is only when a child is over 145cm in height are they suitable to use a vehicle seat belt.


Can a child sit in the front seat?


No. It’s highly recommended a child be seated in the second row. Also, the front passenger seat does not have the required anchor points to fit the child car seat.
